High contrast—like pairing very light outfits with very dark ones—can unintentionally divide the image. Your eye naturally jumps to the darkest or boldest element first, which can distract from the people and emotion in the photo.
Instead, aim for even, balanced tones across the group so everyone feels visually connected.
Patterns can be beautiful—but only when used sparingly.
What works well:
Subtle florals
Soft, wide stripes
Light texture (linen, knits, gauze)
For children, a simple striped jumpsuit or delicate floral can add just enough personality without overwhelming the image.
What to avoid:
Busy or bold prints
Logos or graphics
Pinstripe shirts (especially the thin, closely spaced lines—these tend to create visual distortion on camera)
When in doubt, less is always more.
Thoughtful Shoe Choices Matter More Than You Think
Shoes are one of the most overlooked details—but they absolutely show up in your photos.
Choose:
Neutral sandals
Simple flats
Barefoot (always beautiful and encouraged for littles!)
Soft-toned boots
Avoid:
Athletic sneakers
Dark or heavy shoes
Bright colors
A good rule: if the shoe draws your attention when you look down, it will do the same in your photos.
Yes, You Can Wear Pants (and Still Feel Elevated)
Dresses are beautiful, but they’re not the only option.
Women can absolutely wear:
Flowy wide-leg pants
Linen trousers
Soft, tailored sets
Pair with a simple tank, blouse, or lightweight sweater for a look that feels effortless and refined.
The key is choosing pieces with movement and softness, rather than anything stiff or overly structured.
Instead of matching exactly, think of your family as a palette—each person wearing a slightly different tone within the same soft, earthy range.
This creates dimension, depth, and that organic, editorial feel—while still keeping everything cohesive.
If you’d like help pulling everything together, I’m always happy to look over outfit options or help you build your palette. This is one of my favorite parts of the process, and it makes such a difference in your final images.
